Trauma and Daily Function

Trauma is a disordered psychological or behavioral state resulting from severe mental/emotional stress or physical injury. Trauma can be experienced throughout the lifespan and physically rearranges the brain, which can impact daily function. 

Trauma is a subjective experience. Someone may develop trauma through one of the following life circumstances: 

Difficulties during pregnancy or birth

In utero drug exposure

Domestic violence

Medical issues at birth (NICU)

Early childhood neglect

Physical/Emotional/Sexual Abuse

Physical injury

Systemic changes (Foster care/Adoption)

Traumatic experiences (Violence/Car accident/Surgery/etc)

Additional life experiences causing distress
